In this post we share some tips for developing a well thought out positioning statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is a Positioning Statement?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A well-crafted positioning statement brings\ntogether your overall value proposition with your positioning for a product.\nThis is accomplished in a few concise statements. These are high-level\nstatements. As you write them, don\u2019t get down in the weeds about what you are\nplanning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can think of it as kind of an elevator\npitch you would be able to use to give a clear idea of your goals in just a\nsnapshot. It\u2019s quick, but it\u2019s also comprehensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Good Positioning Statement Framework<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We can thank Geoffrey Moore and his book <em>Crossing the Chasm<\/em> for this useful\ntemplate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Statement<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>Description<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FOR &lt;target market&gt; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A concise definition of the market segment<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WHO HAVE &lt;this problem&gt; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;           The problem statement indicating the underserved need or market gap<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OUR PRODUCT IS &lt;solution\ncategory&gt;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A generic name to help categorize the solution\nto the market<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>THAT PROVIDES &lt;key benefits&gt; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Key benefit(s) and the value provided<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNLIKE &lt;reference competition&gt; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;    Defines the primary alternative market solution(s)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OUR SOLUTION &lt;key advantages&gt; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Identifies how this product differentiates from the competition in a way that creates value&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Four Essentials for a Useful Positioning Statement<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You want your positioning statement to be as\nuseful as possible, so make sure it contains these four elements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Make sure it identifies the overall purpose of\nthe product. What is the added value to be gained and what market gap does it\nfill? How is it better than current solutions?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Be sure it contains enough information that\nthose unfamiliar with the product can \u201cget it\u201d in a brief conversation.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Use analogies to other existing solutions to\nfurther understanding and create an image for your reader.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Keep your focus on benefits and value. Don\u2019t\ndwell on features and other specifics.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Other Forms for Your Positioning Statement<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Two common forms that can help galvanize\nunderstanding are the Simile and the User-Story Format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Simile approach<\/em> is probably the easiest way to telegraph your positioning statement. In essence, you compare your solution to another category of solution. For example, the Amazon Kindle does for reading what our &lt;product&gt; does for &lt;category&gt;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your team is comfortable with Agile, it will likely respond well to the <em>User-Story format<\/em>. Your team members can write up a positioning statement like any user story, only this one will focus on the product level.
